Eurofins GeneScan Licenses Animal Feed Safety Tests from Veterinary Laboratories Agency

Des Moines, IA -- October 18, 2007 -- Concern for BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) has become a focal point of feed safety throughout the world. Many countries have imposed restrictions, even outright bans, on the use of proteins and other by-products of ruminant origin in feed for ruminants. In fact, some jurisdictions have banned the use of all animal proteins in animal feeds.  The identification of prohibited materials (proteins and other by-products of ruminant origin) related to control of BSE can be achieved by:

* PCR testing for the presence of the DNA from a particular animal species, or
* Microscopic examination of the feed.

Strategic Collaboration for International Feed Safety

To address the quality and the safety of feed and feed ingredients throughout an integrated international feed supply chain, a strategic alliance has been formed between Veterinary Laboratories Agency (UK) and Eurofins GeneScan. These industry leaders have joined forces to provide a unified basis for testing feed products. Under the terms of this alliance, Eurofins GeneScan has been granted an exclusive license for North and South America to offer testing services based on test methods developed by VLA. These tests enable our clients to determine the safety of their feed products and will provide the documentation needed to meet commercial and regulatory requirements.

Comprehensive Feed Safety Programs

The testing of ingredients and final feed products is also a tool to verify that the GMP and HACCP programs being utilized in the plant are operating within specifications. Eurofins offers FeedQual (Feed Quality Production Program) to the industry which are programs designed to assist in establishing effective HACCP and GMP processes focused on production of safe feed meeting targeted regulatory and commercial needs.
