The rise was due to the increase of productivity by 1.57 percent or 0.77 quintal per hectare, and harvested areas by 4.18 percent or 515,310 hectares, the head of the bureau Rusman Heriawan said.

"The rise by over 5 percent is seldom, this is only the second time in recent years," he said at a joint press conference.

For corn, he said that the production was estimated to rise by 8.22 percent or 1.34 million tons to 17.66 million ton this year, he said.

The rise would be resulted by the expansion of harvested areas by 4.81 percent or 192,420 hectares, and the rise of productivity by 3.24 percent or 1.32 quintal per hectare, said Heriawan.

On soybean, he said that the production was predicted to rise by 24.59 percent to 966,470 tons in 2009. T he rise was due to the increases of productivity by 1.07 percent to 0.14 quintal per hectare and the harvested areas by 213. 22 percent to 137,240 hectares, said Heriawan.

The increase of all of the farm produce was also contributed by favorable weather, he said.

El Nino which is predicted to hit the country, would not give significant impact on the growth, as the authorities would have overcome it, Director General for Food of the Agriculture Ministry, Sutarto Ali Musro told the conference.

The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency has said that the El Nino would cause the delay of the wet season from 10 to 30 days. "But, it has and will happen in small part of the country. So it would not significantly affect," said Musro.

Rice is the main commodity in the archipelago country, as it is the staple food for most of the 230 million people.
