Brazil's Grain Crop to Increase 3.8 Percent in 2010, Says Official Estimate

Xinhua News Agency (China) -- RIO De JANEIRO -- November 5, 2009 -- Brazil's grain crop would increase 3.8 percent over 2009 in 2010, reaching 139.3 million tons, according to estimates released Thursday by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Soybean production was estimated at 63.7 million tons, up 11.8 percent from 2009, while the first corn crop was expected to fall 2.2 percent to 33.1 million tons. Rice crops may total 11.9 million tons, down 5.1 percent.

Brazil's cultivated land in 2010 would register a growth of 1.6 percent, reaching 47.9 million hectares.

According to the IBGE, land cultivated with soybeans, corn and rice accounted for 81.4 percent of the total 47.2 million hectares in 2009.

Brazil's grain crop in 2009 would total 134.1 million tons, down 8.1 percent from the record-high crop of 146 million tons registered last year.
