Conference to Highlight Healthy Protein, Oils Requirements in Updated U.S. Dietary Guidelines

Soyatech, LLC -- SOUTHWEST HARBOR, ME -- February 24, 2011 -- Recently released updates to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines encourage Americans to eat a variety of protein foods, including soyfoods, and to reduce intake of solid and saturated fats. The program at next month’s Soyfoods2011: Plant Proteins and Oils for Better Nutrition conference will examine how the revised Dietary Guidelines may impact the development and marketing of soy-based and other healthful foods. Soyfoods2011, an annual event organized by Soyatech, LLC, the leading soy and oilseed industry intelligence resource, will be held on March 9, 2011 at the Sheraton Park Hotel in Anaheim, California.

Soy protein-based foods are cited twice in the executive summary to the newly released Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010 as ‘foods and nutrients to increase.’ The Soyfoods2011 program will consider the latest research on the relationship between soy and health; strategies for increasing availability of soyfoods in foodservice for consumers looking for more healthful dietary options and creating healthful products which consumers will find appealing, flavorful and easy to prepare.

The new Dietary Guidelines publication also recommends that the average Americans reduce intake of saturated fats to less than 10 percent of calories consumed and suggests where possible replacing solid fats with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils. The Soyfoods2011 conference program will contain an afternoon breakout that will illuminate opportunities for makers of healthful oils and fats to help consumers understand and make appropriate dietary decisions.

Leading nutrition experts providing information and guidance on these topics will include:

• Patricia Bannan, RD, author of Eat Right When Time Is Tight (, 2010);
• Andrea Carrothers, RD, Nutrition Communications Manager – WhiteWave Foods;
• Kelley Fitzpatrick, Director of Health & Nutrition – Flax Canada;
• Andrea Giancoli, MPH, RD, spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association;
• Cheryl Hughes, CN, owner – The Whole Wheatery; and
• Dr. Mark Messina, leading soy nutrition researcher and president – Nutrition Matters, Inc.

“This conference provides food processors and marketers with a unique opportunity to learn from leading, nationally recognized nutritionists on appropriately reaching consumers with healthful products. We are very excited to be hosting this program,” says Joe Jordan, Content Director for Soyatech, LLC, “and we are confident that the international audience attending Soyfoods2011 will find this content enriching and useful for their product development and marketing plans.”

The Soyfoods2011 program is specifically designed for food manufacturers and marketers; manufacturers of healthful food ingredients; nutritionists and dieticians; retail food buyers and food processing equipment manufacturers.
