SunButter Sunflower Butter Industrial Sales up 140% Due to Broad Based New Usage

Business Wire -- FARGO, ND -- June 1, 2012 -- Red River Commodities announced that sales of their sunflower butter product achieved a sales increase of over 140% from year ago record levels. This represents the highest sales level so far for SunButter®.

When asked about the record sales results, Dan Hofland, Vice President of Marketing, stated, “We attribute the tremendous sales growth for SunButter to three major reasons. The first is the enormous popularity of sunflower seeds and sunflower flavor. Sunflower seeds are eaten in most households and people are interested in getting that flavor they love in a wide range of products. Secondly, with the substantial growth in peanut allergies, more and more manufacturers are creating peanut-free products using SunButter which provides a similar taste, texture and performance to peanut butter. Lastly, there is a world-wide shortage of peanuts and high prices on other nut butters, causing manufacturers to formulate products with SunButter.”

The interest in SunButter is coming from a wide range of manufacturers and a substantial number of product categories. The product is easy to use as a replacement for peanut butter, as it has similar properties and can generally be used in the same quantity as peanut butter for most products making it easy to create peanut-free products. SunButter is also easily incorporated in baked products, candies and dairy products.

When asked what some of the new uses for SunButter are, Hofland commented, “I continue to be impressed by the creative ways manufacturers are using SunButter in their product development. In just the last year, products using SunButter have been introduced or are in test in the pretzel, candy bar, ice cream, salad dressing, energy bar, beverage and at least a half-dozen other categories. As manufacturers focus more on health and nutrition benefits, we see a number of manufacturers exploring the use of SunButter for its nutritional benefits versus other nut butters.”

Based on the strong demand from manufacturers and how it could be used in product development, SunButter partnered with Food Product Design magazine to provide a webinar entitled, “New Product Opportunities Using One Of America’s Favorite Flavors.” The webinar presenter was Thunyaporn Jeradechachai (Naggie), a well-known food scientist of the Northern Crop Institute in Fargo, North Dakota. One of Naggie’s areas of specialty is sunflower seeds including their nutritional properties and how they can be used in product development. When asked about the webinar, she stated, “Sunflower butter is becoming a very popular ingredient and I was impressed by the number and wide range of companies that attended the webinar. From the very specific questions that were asked by attendees, it’s clear that a lot of companies are in the process of developing products using sunflower butter or considering it for product development.”
