$8 Million Funding Available for Increasing Nitrogen Availability in Crop Production

Targeted News Service -- WASHINGTON, DC -- July 16, 2012 -- The U.S. National Science Foundation has announced that it expects to award a maximum of 10 discretionary grants to support research that will help increase nitrogen availability to crop plants thereby preventing the use of nitrogen-based fertilizers.

The estimated total program funding available was cited as $8 million with a ceiling of $1.5 million for each award under this program.

This funding opportunity is open to any entity such as state, county, city, township and special district governments; Native American tribal governments and organizations; institutions of higher education; Historically Black Colleges and Universities; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities; nonprofits; for profit organizations; small businesses; eligible agencies of the federal government; and faith-based or community-based organizations.

A funding opportunity notice from the NSF states: "The aim of this Ideas Lab between the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the US and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) in the UK is to help meet the challenge of sustainably producing enough food for a growing population while reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The aspiration is that mixing researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds will engender fresh thinking and new approaches that can be used to increase nitrogen availability to crop plants whilst maintaining or increasing yield and hence decrease the need for the application of fertilizer. In addition, by bringing together highly qualified researchers from the US and the UK, the intention is to form strong transatlantic alliances, where the resulting synergies from the expertise of each partner allow for significant added value. Collaboration among researchers from USA and UK is strongly encouraged in the full proposals."

The funding opportunity number is 12-579 (CFDA 47.074). The application closing date is Feb. 1, 2013.
