Arkansas Governor Declares Emergency to Assist Harvest
Associated Press -- LITTLE ROCK, AR -- September 3, 2012 -- Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe has declared an emergency to assist farmers with transport of their harvested crops. The governor's declaration Thursday allows special permits to be issued so agricultural products can be shipped on controlled access highways.
Beebe declared the emergency because harvested crops have backed up due to low flows on the Mississippi River that have hindered barge traffic.
The declaration is in effect for 30 days and allows corn, rice, soybeans and grain sorghum to be trucked on the interstate highways as long as the loads don't exceed 85,000 pounds.
