Harkin Announces $3.5 Million for ISU Biofuels Research
Targeted News Service -- WASHINGTON, DC -- September 6, 2012 -- Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that Iowa State University has been awarded $3,500,000 for a three-year collaboration with Catchlight Energy LLC of San Ramon, CA. The funding will be used to develop an environmentally and economically viable system to produce bio-gasoline and bio-diesel from corn stover, forest residuals and switchgrass. These "drop-in" fuels are fully compatible with current vehicle engines and fuels infrastructure. The award comes from the Biomass Research and Development Program, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Energy, that was included in the energy title of the 2008 farm bill by Harkin. "ISU is leading the way in groundbreaking research - as evidenced by the integrated feedstock development and biofuels research plan that have led to this award," said Harkin. "This project spurs the sustainable development of transportation fuels and other products from our domestic, renewable biomass resources, and it creates clean energy jobs and helps Iowa's economy, while also reducing our dependence on foreign oil. These advancements will only further grow the biofuels industry in our state." Awardees must pursue projects that integrate science and engineering research in three areas: feedstock development, biofuels and biobased products development, and biofuels development analysis.(c) 2012 Targeted News Service
