Oklahoma Oilseed Commission Funds Canola Research

Daily Oklahoman (Oklahoma City) -- STILLWATER, OK -- September 11, 2012 -- The Oklahoma Oilseed Commission has agreed to fund $65,000 in canola research at Oklahoma State University with the goal of providing practical results producers can observe.

A new industry in the state, canola is one of Oklahoma's most in-demand and viable crops, the commission said. In 2009, producers planted 40,000 acres of canola; 150,000 acres were planted in the fall of 2011 with significantly more expected this year.

The research through OSU's agricultural sciences and natural resources division will address soil fertility, insect and disease control and variety performance. It will be conducted at Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station facilities and in grower's fields across the state.

"Grower-provided funding helps leverage state and federal funds for research," said Dave Porter, head of OSU's department of plant and soil sciences. "With ever-tightening state and federal budgets, support dollars from groups such as OOC (the oilseed commission) are critically important to research efforts that develop the advances in crops and best management practices necessary for producers to prosper in a business climate that allows for little or no margin of error."

The commission, created in 2010, is funded through an assessment on producer sales.
