Drought Impact Only Slight as Minnesota Harvest Begins

Saint Paul Pioneer Press (MN) -- September 10, 2012 -- Minnesota's fall harvest has begun.

The combines started rolling through corn and soybean fields last week, farmers told the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That's a couple weeks ahead of the usual pace.

In a report issued Monday, Sept. 10, USDA said 2 percent of the state's corn acres and 2 percent of the soybean acres have already been harvested. A warm spring and a hot, dry summer brought the crop to maturity early.

Minnesota farmers are expecting to harvest 8.25 million acres of corn this fall, a record amount. But after a strong start, corn yields have slid because of drought in some parts of the state, and unseasonable heat.

Minnesota farmers are also expecting to harvest soybeans on 6.9 million acres.

Despite the dry conditions, Minnesota escaped the worst of the drought that has seared much of the nation's heartland. That drought has pushed grain prices higher, leading to new worries about pressure on food prices.
