Agriculture Industry Leaders to Meet with University

Targeted News Service -- MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA -- September 21, 2012 -- RMIT University and the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria are hosting a round table function for 35 agriculture and food industry leaders on 27 September.

The three-hour working lunch at the Melbourne Showgrounds will be hosted by the RMIT Hamilton campus Potter Rural Community Research Network.

Dr Kaye Scholfield, Senior Manager at RMIT Hamilton, said the Royal Melbourne Show brought the country to the city and the Australian Year of the Farmer was an ideal opportunity to strengthen links between rural and urban Australia, to help increase the understanding of food production and supply.

"The round table is the first step to combining perspectives and engaging various sectors in a conversation about the continued production and supply of clean, green and affordable food for Victorian citizens and export," Dr Scholfield said.

"It is a great opportunity for establishing the groundwork for an ongoing discussion about food security between key groups that, under normal circumstances, would not get to engage with each other.

"The discussion will explore the supply chain from production to consumption, business and community needs, available knowledge and responsive policy."

Dr Scholfield said representatives from groups attending included agribusiness, primary industry, rural leaders, young agricultural professionals, government, academics and urban students.

''As a community we need to ensure we have appropriate planning safeguards in place to protect enough agricultural land in Australia, to ensure our own future food security in this country and maintain viable important export industries,'' she said.

"There is considerable activity around food security, safety and production nationally and internationally.

"At this working lunch the multiple perspectives involved in this very broad topic of 'food' will all be represented."
