Ukraine's Harvest Is the Third Largest Since Independence

Targeted News Service  -- KIEV, UKRAINE -- October 3, 2012 -- The domestic agrarians continue harvesting late grain-crops. In total it is threshed more than 33 million tons of grain in the area of 12 million hectares, which is 80% forecast. This was announced by Mykola Prysyazhnyuk the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food during a briefing at the Government House on Oct. 3.

"The domestic agrarians continue harvesting crops. At present there have already been thrashed 12 million hectares, which is 80% forecast. According to our estimates, farmers threshed over 33 million tons of grain. In particular, 7.2 million tons corn are threshed, buckwheat - 225 thousand tons, millet - 162 thousand tons, rice - 99 thousand tons. Also 5.8 million tons sunflower are threshed, soybean -1.3 million tons," Mykola Prysyazhnyuk informed.

The Minister stressed it is expected to collect 21 million tons of corn and 2.4 million tons of soybeans. According to him, this year's harvest - at the level of 45,5-46 million tons - is the third largest figure since independence.

Mykola Prysyazhnyuk also recalled that 25.4 million tons of early crops have been harvested, including wheat - 15 million tons. As the domestic demand for food grain is 6 million tons, this year's harvest will be more than enough to ensure the country food security.
