Maple Energy Earns Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) Certification

RSB Services Foundation -- MCLEAN, VA -- October 17, 2012 -- The RSB Services Foundation, the implementing entity of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) which has developed a global sustainability standard and certification system for biofuel production, is pleased to announce that two of the subsidiaries of Maple Energy PLC have received the RSB sustainability certification. The RSB certification applies to Maple Etanol S.R.L. and Maple Biocombustibles S.R.L. fields and facility in Piura, Peru.

Maple Energy is producing ethanol from sugarcane in Piura. Maple Energy¹s completion of RSB certification offers tangible evidence that sustainable biofuels are efficiently and economically produced at a large scale while adhering to ambitious social and environmental standards. The summary report of the audit is available on the RSB website, www.rsbservices.org. The audit was conducted by SGS, an RSB-accredited certification agency and has received support for initial testing compliance by the IADB through a technical cooperation grant.

"We applaud Maple Energy for their sustainability achievements." says Peter Ryus, CEO of RSB Services Foundation. "It is not always easy to comply with the highest sustainability standards in the biofuels industry, but Maple Energy has proved that they are doing things right and with sincere regard to their employees, local community, and the environment."

"Maple Energy pioneered a model for other producers to follow in Latin America and the Caribbean" says Gloria Visconti, IDB Climate Lead Specialist. "The IDB is committed to the promotion of sustainable biofuels throughout the region. Our Biofuels Sustainability Scorecard and the partnership with RSB are two important elements of this commitment."

The RSB certification system allows farmers, feedstock processors and biofuel producers to demonstrate that their operations comply with ambitious yet practical safeguards, including, but not limited to, the protection of natural or rare ecosystems, food security, and the respect of human rights to land, water and decent work conditions, and the management of water resources.

"We are delighted to report the certification of Maple's ethanol operations by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels which provides evidence of our compliance with the highest sustainability standards in the biofuels industry and allows our ethanol to be distributed into key EU markets" commented Rex Canon, CEO of Maple Energy.

The RSB certification system is approved by the European Commission, as proof of compliance with the Renewable Energy Directive or RED (2009/28/EC). The RSB global sustainability standard represents a global consensus of over 120 organizations including farmers, fuel refiners, regulators and NGOs, and is intended to ensure the sustainability of biofuels production practices while streamlining compliance for industry.
