Recommendations Released for Planting Wheat Following Sorghum in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia
PR Newswire -- WARSAW, N.C. -- October 26, 2012 -- Grain sorghum is proving to be a great fit for many farmers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Acreage planted to the crop increased from 10,000 acres in 2011 to 50,000 acres in 2012 in North Carolina alone. The crop is attractive to growers because it can deliver consistent yields on marginal, sandy soils, and under drier conditions on better soils. Sorghum also delivers a number of crop rotation benefits for farmers looking to break weed and pest cycles. With the increased interest and planted acres to sorghum, university extension experts have developed a set of recommendations for growers planting wheat following a harvested crop of grain sorghum. The recommendations were developed by researchers at Clemson University, North Carolina State University, and Virginia Tech University. Input was also provided by North Carolina Small Grain Grower Association and the United Sorghum Checkoff Program.
The recommendations address concerns about the potential impact of yields on wheat following sorghum crops, and include specific guidelines to maximize wheat yields.
"We continue to be very excited about the potential for grain sorghum in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia," said Terry Coffey, chief technology officer for Murphy-Brown LLC. "It is an excellent cropping option that provides increased profits for growers, and increases local production of grain to feed livestock."
The full version of recommendations can be found at www.mbgrain.com. Key points include using glyphosate to kill sorghum prior to harvest, making sure fertilizer levels are appropriate prior to planting wheat, increasing seeding rates for no-till wheat planting, and monitoring growth and tiller development of the wheat crop.
