Colombian Government to Invest US$10M in Biofuel Projects

BNamericas.com -- August 10, 2007 -- Colombia's agriculture ministry will invest 20bn pesos (US$10mn) in at least five new ethanol and biodiesel projects within the next four years, state news agency SNE quoted minister Andrés Felipe Arias as saying.

Nearly 40Mha of land are available to produce biofuel crops including palm, sugarcane and yucca without endangering the country's food supply, said Arias.

Colombia produces 1.1Ml/d of ethanol, making it the second-largest producer of the biofuel in Latin America behind Brazil.

The country produces 170,000l/d of biodiesel from African palm and aims to raise its capacity to 800,000l/d by the end of the year.
